Beyond the brief: why your true purpose is your ultimate performance tool
Most great campaigns don't start with a standard channel brief. They start with an uncomfortable truth.
When we looked at the communications challenges facing the non-profit sector, we realised something fundamental about evidence-based organisations. For a charity like Greenpeace, the greatest modern threat wasn't a specific environmental issue: it was the global erosion of truth itself.
Finding inspiration outside the echo chamber
When planning campaigns at DTV, we often seek insight outside of the immediate sector. In this case, the spark of inspiration came from watching the documentary Navalny, when dissident Alexei Navalny states that “the biggest threat to world peace isn't wars, but lies.”
This deliberate spread of misinformation is a profound, existential threat to the entire environmental movement. Because Greenpeace's authority derives in part from objective, scientific truth, tackling this challenge head-on was critical. The world didn't just need another single-issue fundraising proposition; it needed a movement of truth-defenders.
The world needs visionary clients
It is one thing for an agency to propose a radical shift in narrative; it takes real strategic foresight for a client to back it. Hats off to Greenpeace International for being that forward-thinking partner. Ultimately, it wasn’t just about vision, it was about rapid, flexible collaboration between Greenpeace and DTV as together we integrated a strong ‘Protect The Truth’ overarching proposition alongside the Greenpeace ‘Time to Resist’ campaign.
Turning truth into performance
Protect the Truth came to life as a global, integrated, digital-first engagement and acquisition programme framed as a fight for truth itself.
To turn this powerful proposition into measurable performance, we designed a full-funnel digital approach.
As illustrated, this four-stage supporter journey inspired audiences from passive awareness to active, value-driven support. This funnel includes Awareness to inspire and inform a broad audience, Consideration to engage and generate petition prospect leads, Conversion to acquire regular giving (RG) and cash donors, and Retention to reduce attrition and inspire further actions.
We ensured this framework could be activated by Greenpeace offices around the world with a comprehensive campaign playbook and toolkit. This provided Greenpeace's National Regional Offices with strategic guidance, emails, messaging, and multi-channel film assets required to launch successfully in their respective markets. Of course, they were easily adaptable for local languages.
What is your truth?
In a landscape intentionally flooded with noise and misinformation, your "why" has never been more important. The aim of this campaign wasn't just to generate leads and donors; it was to bring on board supporters whose connection to the cause is deeply set in values, ultimately turning them into valuable, long-term advocates.
When was the last time you stripped back your organisation's purpose and turned that raw, unfiltered truth into performance?
So, what is your truth? We’d love to help you find it.
