Meta’s Andromeda: Why creative is the new targeting
If you’ve noticed that tried-and-tested Meta campaigns aren’t delivering the donor volume or ROI they used to, you aren't alone.
Over the last year, the rules of Meta advertising have shifted. The culprit? Andromeda, Meta’s backend ad retrieval engine.
For years, successful digital fundraising relied on precise audience targeting, clear segmentation, and finding the "hero" ad creative to scale. Today, Andromeda has flipped that model on its head.
Here is what Andromeda actually means for the sector, and how it’s changing the way charities must approach Meta creative.
Every time a potential donor/supporter opens Facebook or Instagram, Andromeda evaluates tens of millions of potential ads in fractions of a second to decide which ads will be delivered.
In the past, Meta’s system asked:
"Which users match this specific interest or demographic group?"
Now, Andromeda asks:
"Out of all available creative, which specific ad should this person see right now?"
Instead of defining the audience through interest tags or lookalikes, the creative itself does the targeting. The visual, the hook, the tone, and the message all work together to target a specific audience profile.
We need to do more than " tweak"
Understanding Andromeda means we need to view it as the core of campaign performance.
Previously, amending a top-performing static or video and expanding a suite whilst retaining its overall ‘look and feel’ was enough to refresh a campaign.
Now, Andromeda regards these minor tweaks as duplicates. The impact is that results may be suppressed, and rather than working together to find new audiences, the ads end up competing against each other.
In order to drive response, charities need true diversity; distinct hooks, varying formats, and different creative angles.
The risk of creative fatigue
Because Andromeda targets with precision, individual ads burn out faster, raising valid concerns about the volume of creative needed to sustain a campaign. At DTV, we guide our clients through creative fatigue - always with the goal of protecting your budgets. It's not about generating endless content, it’s about knowing how to make high-performing creative work smarter for longer.
What this means for your fundraising campaigns
Success under Andromeda doesn’t mean running more ads for the sake of volume; it means structuring creative frameworks that speak to different donor motivations and values.
